Comic Book Resources look at LGBT comics all month

Comic Book Resources (CBR) are running a series of articles this month where they look at queer comic books. CBR are running the articles in conjunction with Prism Comics, the preeminent website for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) comics and creators and a site we looked at back in August.

CBR will be detailing "one good comic book/graphic novel with LGBT themes" every day this month, so if you're a comic book fan, you might want to check out the CBR each day to see what they're looking at.

Superdickery - Gay used with negativity annoys one reader

Superdickery is a website on the interwebs and one we hadn't heard of til yesterday when we received an email from a reader - Dave - who asked us to cover the site. Sadly for Superdickery the coverage isn't all positive (though some may argue any coverage is).

We don't like slating other websites (if we did we'd have 10 posts a day probably!), but now and again one has to wonder why people cover things in the manner they do. Superdickery you see is a site that highlights silly comic book covers / panels (usually with double entendre), but our reader took issue with the way the site uses 'gay' in its juvenile sense.

There are a few covers that feature taglines such as "Damn it, Robin, when will you learn? Batman's not gay! He's not into that stuff! Stop molesting him!" - "Oh, Kid Flash and Superboy are caught up on the throes of gay homo love." and "Maybe sidekicks are just inherently fruity by nature".

Megan Fox as Aspen Matthews from Fathom?

Michael Turner is barely cold in the grave and the "Fathom" movie based on one of his most famous comic book characters is in the news again. Word this week that hot young thing Megan Fox has signed on the dotted line to take on the role of Aspen (Fathom) Matthews. There's no official confirmation, so time will tell, but buzz is despite Michael Turner stating - just prior to his death - that the "Fathom" movie was no more, here it is again.

As actresses go Fox is a hot property right now and she has the sex appeal to pull off the role of Fathom, but does she have the smarts and innocence also related to that character? Time will tell. For the moment though it's all a splash with little concrete to go on. Larger images after the jump.

    Sin City Disney style

Talented artiste Curt Rapala has done some rather cool Sin City artworks featuring Disney women. Yeah, you read it right, innocent little Disney girls as those sultry ladies of the Sin City universe. Featured ladies include Ariel from The Little Mermaid as Nancy, Aurora as Goldie, Cinderella as Shellie, Jasmine as Miho, Snow White as Gail and our personal favorite Belle from Beauty and the Beast as Becky.

Check them all out at Curt Rapala's site Not a Fishing Lure.

Prism Comics for big queer geeks!

While looking at the Comic-Con rundown yesterday, my interest was peaked by the inclusion of a company named Prism Comics, who apparently support lesbian, gay, bi and transgendered comics, creators and readers. Knowing how many of you lovely lesbian geeks are into comics, I decided to do a little investigating and see what Prism Comics are all about.

According to their page, Prism are a nonprofit organization originating in 2003. They started off as a group of volunteers who published an annual publication called Out in Comics which listed LGBT creators in comics and quickly grew from there.

They now publish the annual guide Prism Comics: Your LGBT Guide to Comics and have a fantastic website that has a ton of details on queer comics and the people who love them. One of the coolest parts about Prism is that they actively encourage people to send submissions to them and even cover press releases and news articles about LGBT comics. You can volunteer to help them out, or simply head over to their site to show them some love.

    Brent Rinehart comic book

Brent Rinehart's comic isn't the sort of comic that would generally hit our Comic Book section here at Lesbian Geek, but for this unintelligent fool, we're making an exception. Brent you see is an Oklahoma County Commissioner, or was until some felony charges allegedly.

Anyways good ole Brent has sent out a comic book to his voters, a comic penned by himself that you can find HERE. Why are we linking to a homophobic comic book? - So you can write to the powers that be and complain. This guy can't spell, has little grip on reality and clearly isn't that well educated. The fact he's in public office is embarrassing.

Can anyone say 'Internalized Homophobia'  or Cognitive Dissonance.

    Empathy comic - Cool stuff

Empathy is a comic by the rather talented Vinson and Alisha. The central protagonist of the comic is Sydney Quinn, she's a converse wearing lesbian  who gets into all manner of misadventure. Artist and writer of Empathy Alisha states "The converse are the first clue to Sydney's sexual orientation (because what kind of lesbian are you if you don't have converse? Come on ladies! All the cool lesbians are doing it!)". Well I'm not sure if I'm cool, but I have Converse sneakers.

Check out Empathy HERE and we suggest you do! Also be sure and take a look at one of the panels in issue one (page twelve) to see just what kind of websites the rather cool Sydney Quinn visits in her web surfing time.

    Thanks Alisha.

    Michael Turner dies at 37

It is with a truly heavy heart we report this news. Comic book artist Michael Turner - famous for Fathom & Witchblade to name but a couple - died on Friday at the age of 37. Turner had long been fighting cancer and succumbed to the disease late Friday night in a Santa Monica hospital.

To his fans Turner was a true inspiration and comic book genius. He was discovered at a convention and quickly rose to the top of the comic book artist field, eventually starting his on company Apen MLT. He was first diagnosed with bone cancer in 2000.

It's truly a sad day for everyone in the comic world when someone who drew such beautiful and strong female characters has passed.

    Batwoman is back & de-closeted?

Batwoman = lesbian, as you've probably been aware for some time now. When news first broke of Batwoman's closeted lifestyle - in 2006 - there was a bit of uproar in the comicbook community. Isn't it annoying when one minority group starts ragging on another! That was a couple of years ago and it seems Batwoman is finally due to step out of the closet.

It's a strange one, as we covered a while ago, Batwoman is seemingly out to the reader anyway as she dates Renee Montoya. News of a new Batwoman series broke on artist Todd Klein's website and then was swiftly removed. Keep your eyes open for it, it will probably get an official announcement at the San-Diego Comic-Con event.

Apocalypstix - Grrl band armageddon style

Apocalypstix the comic is by Ray Fawkes ("Spookshow") and artist Cameron Stewart ("The Other Side," "Catwoman," "Seaguy") and it's getting a special preview over at Comic Book Resources. If you like the sound of an all girl rock band, traveling the post apocalyptic wastes, then seems like you're in luck.

Apocalypstix follows the story of Mandy, Dot and Megumi, three girls who were set for superstardom, when Doomsday happened and they woke up in the rubble of what once was. They thought "frak it!" and carried on their world tour regardless. You can check out the first 50 pages at the CBR preview and the actual comic is released next month.
