Scarlet - The hit new TV series

We saw this some time ago, but as something just didn't sit right with us, we didn't publish it so as to not lead you astray. Leading you astray would have been suggesting this was a new kick ass TV series with a female lead. You'll see what we mean in the trailer below.

As it turns out, that gut feeling was right. Turns out 'Scarlet' wasn't the trailer for a new TV series, but rather a clever marketing campaign for a new series of TV's by LG. Actually these TV's sound pretty cool. They apparently have a scarlet colored back.

Lemon Crush - Liz Lemon nerd love

As a newcomer to 30 Rock it has to be said I wondered what all the Tina Fey love was about in lesboland. Then I watched and developed a very fast Lemon crush. Yes Liz Lemon, so nerdy and yes gaydar twanging that any lesbian geek worth her salt surely must at least develop some crushy feeling for her.

From the constant Star Wars references, to the nerdy glasses and sneakers, Liz Lemon has lesbian nerd written all over her, despite the character being totally straight--though there was that lesbian date in an early episode. If you haven't watched 30 Rock yet, take the time, your lesbian inner geek will thank you.

    Future warnings from Sci-Fi

I love science-fiction, I love technology, I hate robots. Those three little statements sum me up. Whereas most people coo and woo at Asimo, that thing creeps me the hell out. Sure I'd pay money to go see it, but I'd sit in the back row, out of its way. My favorite 'ride' at Universal Studios is Terminator 2, I love it because it's robots, but I know they can't hurt me.

So what's this got to do with future warnings from sci-fi, well, it never ceases to amaze me how many handy tips we get from science fiction that we readily ignore and bin. One of them is AI robots taking over the world and destroying mankind (see Terminator, WestWorld, Battlestar Galactica and others). So why is a Japanese company called Cyberdyne making cybernetic robo suits called HAL?! Oh good grief, don't these people watch movies with killer robots and AI in them?! Anyways, I thought it was interesting and just wanted to share. Here's a movie of creepy little Asimo.

Flex Champion iPod and lamp holder

How cute is this, (s)he's the 'Flex Champion' by Sumajin and he'll light up your desk by holding a lamp, or will hold your iPod for you. There's no overly practical use to this, but it's so darn cute we had to report it.

Cute does come at a cost however, the light bearer / iPod holder will set you back a staggering $200USD. It comes with power supply and energy saver lightbulb and an additional set of arms so it will fit MP3/ iPhone/iPod Touch/iPod Classic/Video iPod and mobile phones. You can see the product page HERE.

Superbia - Suburbia for gay super heroes?

You may recall we brought you news of the Virgin Comics and Sci-Fi comic The Stranded some time ago. Well now there's news of the second in the series, titled 'Superbia' and we wonder if there'll be any gay goings shenanigans.

Why are we wondering this you may ask, well more than one comic news site is using the following line to describe Superbia "a planned community for superheroes, their spouses, girlfriends and domestic partners." Domestic partners? Hello! Sure we know the term can be used for any union (gay or straight), but more often than not it's the one gay couples are slapped with, so... does Superbia sport any queers we're wondering... hmm.

Wonder Woman movie - back on?

Could it be that the Wonder Woman movie is back on track? The film was originally slated way back in 2001 by Joel Silver. Names being thrown into the ring then included Mariah Carey, Sandra Bullock and Catherine Zeta-Jones. After numerous changes, Buffy God Joss Whedon was brought onboard in 2005 to write and direct-still nothing came of it and Whedon split with the studios in Feb 2007 over artistic differences.

This week thanks to Joel Silver, the Wonder Woman movie is back in the news. Silver wants to make a 'genesis film' that explores the origins of Wonder Woman. Though this doesn't mean the film will definitely get made, it does mean it's still out there in the filmic ether. The Justice League film-which is featured Wonder Woman-is said to be completely dead.

    Major Kendra Shaw – Lesbian?

Kendra Shaw (played by Stephanie Jacobsen) appears in the Battlestar Galactica episode ‘Razor’. What made this character so interesting from a lesbian perspective was her overall demeanor and body language with regards to her character interactions, particularly with Gina Inviere and Admiral Helena Cain.

Gina and Helena are lovers in the episode and Kendra is out to impress the Admiral. There are glances given during certain scenes where there appears to be something deeper happening, a crush perhaps on either Cain or Inviere. Nothing is ever stated and it may be purely down to her respect and in Gina’s case initial liking of the character.

    For the lesbian Dick Tracy

Who wants a mobile phone when you can have a wrist watch mobile phone! Yes you can be your very own Dick Tracy. Sure you might actually look like a bit of a 'Dick' talking into it, or having a hand's free headphone set attached to your wrist, but who cares!

We thought this was pretty cool, though perhaps way less cool than one that was in the shape of a Star Trek communicator, that clips onto your jacket / shirt and works with a one button beep press, or even better via voice recognition! "Lesbian Geek" - "calling now" - "Hello Lesbian Geek here?"... oh how we want you, yes, yes we do. No doubt one day we will (well other than the shape of the comm badge).

    The Andromeda Strain is back

Those of you who are a little older in the realm of geekdom may recall a little movie called The Andromeda Strain, a classic sci-fi film by Robert Wise (1971). The film was based on Michael Crichton's 1969 best seller of the same name.

Andromeda is back thanks to the Scott brothers (Ridley and Tony). Known for their strong female characterisations in other work (Alien, Thelma & Louise and The Hunger), Tony and Ridley Scott have made a remake of Andromeda possible and it looks pretty good.

Lesbian link includes the addition of actors Magda Apanowicz and Nicola Anderson both of whom have appeared in The L Word--sure it's a small link, but it is one. The Andromeda Strain is a two night special that starts on Memorial Day in the US (A&E 9pm/8c).

    Large Hedron Collider - LHC

In June this year, the Large Hedron Collider (LHC) will be switched on. What is it? Well essentially it's a giant particle accelerator. Around about August scientists are going to smash particles into one another using the accelerator to try and find the elusive 'Higgs boson'-a theoretical particle.

Why is this important to geeks, well it depends which side of the fence you sit. One side (that of science) is hugely excited about the LHC and the discoveries it may uncover. The other side, that of the worriers think when the LHC starts smashing things, it could open rifts and cause tiny black holes and strangelets to appear, which will essentially mean bye bye us. Scientists assure us there is "powerful empirical evidence against the possibility of dangerous strangelet production." Scientists from the mid 1900's to as late as the 1970's assured us there was evidence homosexuality was a disease that could be cured with high voltage shocks to the head and body or even lobotomy... hmm.
