Doomsday - Lara Croft meets a plague

This is a crossover post between Lesbian Geek and Lesbian Gamers .com. You’ll see why shortly, but first here’s the upshot. Doomsday is an upcoming film by Neil Marshall, he’s a British writer / director perhaps best known for werewolf gore fest Dog Soldiers and girly caving flick The Descent. Grrls may well think Doomsday is cool because it stars Rhona Mitra as a specialist soldier named Eden Sinclair.

The clip below the theatrical trailer and shows the hero Eden Sinclair kicking ass as well as giving the background to the story (in short Scotland is plague ridden and closed off to the rest of the UK, but returned to 25 years later to look for a cure).

The gaming link comes in that Rhona Mitra was the original Lara Croft model. Be sure and check out the full trailer and tell us you don’t think Rhona would make a pretty cool Lara Croft, sure maybe not as cool as Angelina, but pretty darn close. On a Lesbian Geek side link in, Rhona is also the lead in the upcoming werewolf film Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.

    X-Files 2 The Movie

We felt we HAD to cover this, because let's face it, Dana Scully has a very special place in many lesbian hearts, she is an awesome character. Fox Mulder too was just so cool, they were pretty much the epitome of cool TV characters, at least for the first 4 seasons or so.

You've no doubt heard they're returning for another X-Files movie and we here at LesbianGeek are beside ourselves with joy. The new X-Files movie will release 24 - 26 July 2008 and will co-star Billy Connolly, Amanda Peet and Callum Keith Rennie--a LesboGeek favorite since he plays Leoben in the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica. Roll on July 24th!

    Jennifer's Body by Diablo Cody

Diablo Cody, she sprang out of seemingly nowhere with the smash movie 'Juno' and soon she'll be working on her next project a horror film called 'Jennifer's Body'. The film will follow the story of a possessed cheerleader that turns into a killer. Her specialty (which is of no relevance to the fact we're a lesbian site) is offing her male classmates.

Jennifer's Body stars Transformers beauty Megan Fox and Amanda Sayfried (probably best known to lesbian viewers as Lilly Kane in Veronica Mars). Jennifer's Body starts filming in a couple of weeks, the only downside is that it's said to be "in the vein of Heathers", which was a love it or hate it movie, for me, it was definitely the latter.

    Appleseed Ex Machina

I really enjoyed the first Appleseed movie, with its cool female [babydyke looking] protagonist Deunan Knute and her cyborg partner Briareos. The sequel by Shinji Aramaki is released on DVD March 11 and is looking pretty cool, well other than the 'love story' elements they've tried to squeeze in with a new handsome lead, rather than leaving the weird but deep relationship between Deunan and Briareos.

Here's a trailer of the sequel for those that may be interested, also for gamers with a PS3 it's coming out on Blu-Ray as well.

DC cut back on lesbians and teen death

DC Comics Senior VP Dan DiDio got fans all in a fluster when he’d let slip a new Batwoman series was in the offing, only to counter it hours later with an apology saying he’d been in error and that it was actually Batgirl and not Batwoman.

Where this matters to lesbian geeks of course is in the fact Batwoman is a lesbian, so that would have been cool. Batwoman (Kathy Kane) is a closeted lesbian in her comic book appearances, however she is romantically involved with Gotham City Detective Renee Montoya, so is out to the reader.

DC Comics are also said to be cutting back on teenage death in comics—teen angst OK, teen death not so good.

Battlestar Galactica and The L Word crossover

As a fan of both of these series (okay I’m not actually a fan of the latter, I’m more forced to endure its awful Elizabeth Ziff written / self obsessed ramblings due to little choice) I noticed a strange thing, a crossover of gargantuan proportion – actors from each show appearing in the other. You are watching The L Word and boom, there’s someone from Battlestar Galactica (or vice versa).

I thought it would be fun to look at some of The L Word / Battlestar Galactica crossover actors. It’s not a conspiracy that this is the case, just that both shows shoot in Vancouver. It’s clearly easier for the studios to hire local actors, but it does lead to some interesting character changes for people we may have grown to love or hate.

Toy Fair 08 – Action Figures for geek girls

Toy Fair is on in New York at the moment and we’ve got our choice for the coolest we’ve seen so far. All the things you’d expect to see there are on show, including a lot of Batman, Indiana Jones and Star Trek (given all three geek films are released this year). For the older geek there are some nice Dark Crystal figures, some funky Dr Who stuff, the Goonies, Transformers and superheroes aplenty.

Hit the jump for some of things we thought were the coolest.

Rise – Lucy Lui vampire hunter

This is a sort of quick movie review of Rise: Blood Hunter, a vampire film starring Lucy Liu. When I picked up the DVD of Rise: Blood Hunter, I thought this was going to rock, it’s essentially like Blade, but instead of a guy, it’s a girl and it’s Lucy Lui – how much better than that can you get.

I popped Rise into the DVD player and my girlfriend and I got comfy. A few minutes in and there’s Lucy Liu in a sort of semi lesbian tryst, wow this is going to be better than we thought. An hour in and we were both looking at watches saying “how much longer has it got”. Yeah--not so good. If you like your vampire hunter movies, you could do worse, but as a movie in itself, Rise: Blood Hunter really wasn’t that good. A shame, but we thought we’d highlight it here by mini review, on the off chance a minute of Lucy Lui showing her stern “lesbian” side is to your liking. Rise: Blood Hunter is available of Region 1, 2 and 4 DVD.

    Freak Angels webcomic

If you like your steampunk, there’s a new webcomic out called Freak Angels you might want to check out. Freak Angels is written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Paul Duffield. Ellis is best known for his sociocultural commentary as well as comics Transmetropolitan (cyberpunk) and The Authority by DC Comics.

On the off chance you’re unfamiliar with the steampunk genre, it is kind of a fusion of fantasy and speculative fiction that centers on the use of steam as a main power source of humanity. This gives things a funky Victorian era feel. Famous steampunk would include the Nautilus from Jules Verne and the Time Machine from H. G. Wells. There’s no lesbian content we’re aware of, we just thought you comic folk might enjoy it since it’s free.

You can check it out HERE.

The sQuba concept - Jane Bond style

Not sure why you’d want to, but if you ever wanted to drive off the road and into the sea or other body of water, I guess this is the car for you. The sQuba (concept) is an all electric submersible convertible that can drive on land and under water. It comes with an onboard breathing system that works like scuba gear. As gadgets go this one is pretty out there and you can’t even buy it for your car / gadget / Bond loving grrl, because it’s just a concept car, still we thought you might like it.
